Ingredient Benefits
Pediococcus acidilactici: Pediococcus acidilactici plays a crucial role in maintaining gut health by supporting the gut lining and intestinal permeability. This probiotic helps to fortify the intestinal barrier, which prevents harmful substances and pathogens from entering the bloodstream. Its beneficial effects on the gut lining can help support a healthier immune system response.
Bacillus subtilis: Bacillus subtilis is a probiotic bacteria found in soil and the canine gut. B. subtilis is known for its ability to support a healthy gut microbiome, enhance digestive health and support immune function. It produces byproducts that can help suppress harmful bacteria and promote the growth of beneficial bacteria. Additionally, Bacillus subtilis has been associated with digestive enzyme production, aiding in the digestion of food and the supporting against gastrointestinal disorders.
Soil-based probiotics, like Bacillus subtilis, are often considered superior to other probiotics due to their exceptional resilience and ability to survive the acidic environment of the stomach, ensuring they reach the intestines where they can be most beneficial. Their inherent stability means they don’t require refrigeration and maintain potency over time and their robust nature allows for a potentially broader impact on the gut microbiome.
Bacillus coagulans: Bacillus coagulans is a soil-based probiotic that supports gut health by enhancing the balance of the intestinal microbiota, contributing to improved digestion and reducing symptoms of occasional bloating, gas, and diarrhea. It also supports the immune system by producing short-chain fatty acids, which are crucial for gut health and promotes the body’s gut and immune health.
Soil-based probiotics, like Bacillus coagulans, are often considered superior to other probiotics due to their exceptional resilience and ability to survive the acidic environment of the stomach, ensuring they reach the intestines where they can be most beneficial. Their inherent stability means they don’t require refrigeration and maintain potency over time and their robust nature allows for a potentially broader impact on the gut microbiome.
L-glutamine: L-glutamine, an amino acid, plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of the intestinal lining, thereby supporting gut health by preventing the leakage of harmful substances into the body. It serves as a primary fuel source for the cells of the intestinal lining, promoting their growth and repair, which can help with gut-related issues. Additionally, L-glutamine can support a normal inflammatory response in the gut, further supporting digestive health.
Deglycyrrhizinated licorice root (DGL): Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) root is a form of licorice that’s widely recognized for its ability to soothe gastrointestinal problems, as it helps to support the gut lining and esophagus, assisting with the symptoms of acid reflux and indigestion. Additionally, its anti-inflammatory and demulcent properties support the natural resistance to ulcers and maintain the health of the mucous membranes lining the digestive tract.
N-acetyl glucosamine (NAG): N-acetyl glucosamine (NAG) is a compound that plays a key role in the health of the gastrointestinal lining, supporting the integrity of the gut barrier. Beyond its benefits for gut health, NAG is also involved in the synthesis of hyaluronic acid, contributing to joint health by promoting healthy cartilage, skin and a balanced inflammatory response.
Organic marshmallow root: Marshmallow root is renowned for its mucilaginous properties, which bolster the gut lining. Its ability to promote healthy mucus secretion helps support overall gut health and aids in the integrity of the mucosal lining.
Organic aloe vera: Aloe vera is celebrated for its natural soothing properties, which can benefit the gut lining. Its gel contains polysaccharides that support the lining of the digestive tract.
Organic slippery elm: Slippery elm contains mucilage, a gel-like substance that can coat and help soothe the mucous membranes lining the digestive tract. Slippery elm can also assist nerve endings in the gastrointestinal tract to increase mucus secretion, which helps form a healthy coating in the mucous membrane.
Organic dandelion root: Dandelion root is renowned for its liver-supporting and detoxifying properties, aiding in the removal of toxins and promoting liver health. It also acts as a natural diuretic, helping to manage fluid retention and support kidney function. Rich in antioxidants, dandelion root can further contribute to a normal inflammatory response.
Organic ginger root: Ginger root is renowned for its potent antioxidative properties and its ability to support a healthy inflammatory response. It helps the body’s ability to produce saliva, bile, and gastric enzymes, enhances the digestion and absorption of nutrients.
Organic chamomile: Chamomile is widely recognized for its calming properties, its ability to balance the inflammatory response in the gut and for maintaining a healthy digestive system.
Organic burdock root: Burdock root supports healthy skin and is also rich in antioxidants, which neutralize harmful free radicals. Burdock root also supports liver function and digestion, thanks to its inulin content, a type of soluble fiber that supports healthy gut bacteria.
Humic acid: Humic acid is a natural component of soil and a byproduct of the decomposition of leaves and other plant material by soil-based microorganisms. Humic acid supports a healthy gut and helps detoxify from heavy metals and environmental toxins. It also supplies antioxidants and supports the immune system.
Fulvic acid: Like humic acid, fulvic acid is a part of the organic matter in soil, peat and water. Fulvic acid helps detoxify from heavy metals and environmental toxins, supports healthy skin and provides antioxidants.

F A Q
How does Gut Guard support dogs with sensitive or distressed guts?
Gut Guard combines probiotics, amino acids and soothing herbs to help maintain the integrity of the gut lining and support normal digestive function. It’s designed for dogs who need extra help keeping their digestive systems balanced and comfortable.
What makes Gut Guard different from regular probiotics?
While most probiotics only add good bacteria, Gut Guard goes further. It includes amino acids and herbal ingredients that help nourish and protect the gut lining, supporting both the microbiome and the tissue that houses it.
How does Gut Guard help with “leaky gut”?
Leaky gut happens when the intestinal barrier becomes stressed or overly permeable. Gut Guard provides key ingredients like L-glutamine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine that help maintain a strong, healthy gut barrier and normal mucosal function.
What role do the herbs play in Gut Guard?
Herbs like licorice root, marshmallow root, and aloe vera are included to help soothe the gut lining and support normal inflammatory responses. They work alongside the probiotics in Gut Guard to create a healthy internal environment.
Why include L-glutamine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine?
These natural compounds are important fuel sources for intestinal cells. They help maintain healthy tissue repair and support the gut’s normal protective barrier especially during times of digestive stress.
What kinds of probiotics are in Gut Guard?
Gut Guard uses soil-based and lactic acid probiotics, including Pediococcus acidilactici, Bacillus coagulans, and Bacillus subtilis all selected for their ability to survive stomach acid and colonize the gut effectively.
Can I use Gut Guard every day?
Yes. Gut Guard should be used daily, but only for 60 days at a time. If your dog has improved after 60 days, we recommend switching to Protect for everyday probiotic support. If your dog still shows signs of a distressed gut, give Protect for 30 days, then give Gut Guard for 60 more days before changing back to Protect.
Is Gut Guard safe for puppies and senior dogs?
Gut Guard is best used on adult dogs and seniors since puppies should have a better balanced gut lining. For puppies, we recommend Protect, our everyday probiotic that gently helps detoxify from environmental toxins.
Can Gut Guard be used with Protect?
It’s best to rotate Gut Guard and Protect instead of giving them at the same time. If your dog has improved after 60 days of using Gut Guard, we recommend switching to Protect for everyday probiotic support. If your dog still shows signs of a distressed gut, give Protect for 30 days, then give Gut Guard for 60 more days before changing back to Protect.
Does Gut Guard contain any fillers or synthetic additives?
Never. It’s made only with clean, natural ingredients and no artificial flavors, preservatives, or colors.
How long before I see results?
Every dog is different, but many pet parents notice improved stool quality, calmer digestion, and overall comfort within 1–3 weeks of consistent use.
Can I use other probiotics, such as Protect and Bifido For Fido with Gut Guard?
Absolutely … Four Leaf Rover’s probiotic products are all beneficial in their own ways. Protect is a soil based probiotic that supports your dog from pesticides and heavy, while Bifido For Fido has specific, veterinarian formulated strains to help with occasional loose stools. Both have their own strengths, but can be helpful when you need them.
What should I use Gut Guard for?
Gut Guard is veterinarian formulated to support a normal, healthy gut lining and flora. Exposure to pesticides, chemicals and processed foods can all harm the gut lining, which can allow unwanted toxins to escape the gut and wreak havoc on your dog. Gut Guard will support a normal gut lining.
How long should my dog use Gut Guard for?
Gut Guard is intended to manage a normal gut lining. A “leaky” gut will often trigger the immune system and you may see the impact on your dog’s skin, organs and digestive tract. Once you see a more balanced immune response, then we recommend keeping your dog on Protect afterward.
Gut Guard should not be given for more than 60 days at a time. Alternate it with Protect until you see the results you want.

Our dog had diarrhea for over a month. After two trips to different veterinarians and two prescriptions which didn’t seem to help we tried Four Leaf Clover Gut Guard and it worked! We just ordered more to have on hand as our dog will eat things that she shouldn’t if left unattended… Thank You Mooshie Pets!

Four Leaf Rover Gut Guard is a combination of herbs I was familiar with, but never before have I found them all in a single supplement. I have a dog who has taken daily prednisone for 6 1/2 of her seven years. She has an auto immune disease and without the prednisone she would die. Long term use of the steroid has many horrible side effects, But with the right supplements the side effects have so far been minimal. I started using Gut Guard about five months ago, when my girl had a flareup of her disease and ultrasound showed that many of her organs were inflamed. This included her stomach and intestines. Of course I used sucralfate four times a day to heal the lesions that it could reach, and then I started giving her Gut Guard twice daily, hoping it would rebuild and strengthen the lining of her stomach and intestines. IT WORKED, even though she had to continue taking the prednisone. That is really something! It’s an extra blessing that the flavor of the herbs does not disagree with her. She eats it right up! (I tasted it and it’s really not bad at all.) I choose to continue using Gut Guard for ten days out of each month for maintenance, because symptoms of her autoimmune flareup are subtle until it becomes an emergency. I’m thankful that I now have a supplement that can save her so much suffering by maintaining her healthy gut lining. The bonus: with Gut Guard, she can now eat small amounts of raw veggies and chew on raw meaty bones — she missed out on those delights all her life because her GI system was not up to the challenge. It’s such a joy to hold a special treat before her and see her dear face light up! (I think Gut Guard has added some brightness to her eyes as well!) Thanks so much, Four Leaf Rover peeps! And Madeleine, thank you ever so much for making the extra effort to get Gut Guard for us. No one in the US was selling it. This product has changed our lives.

Excellent service! My order for Gut Guard shipped same day as I ordered it. It arrived quickly and I was notified when it had been delivered which was really helpful. I have donated this product to our local animal shelter specifically for a sweet and large GSD who has digestion issues. I can’t rate how effective the product is yet as not enough time has passed. I know that I feel it will make a considerable difference for him. I will try to update when I have feedback on his progress.
