Green Lipped Mussels
Green-lipped mussels are renowned for their beneficial impact on joint health in dogs, primarily due to their high content of eicosatetraenoic acid (ETA) and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). ETA is a unique omega-3 fatty acid that’s unique to green lipped mussels. It supports a normal inflammatory response, which is crucial for dogs with joint or soft tissue issues. GAGs, on the other hand, are essential components of cartilage and joint fluid, playing a key role in maintaining joint lubrication and cartilage resilience for normal joint mobility and cushioning. Together, ETA and GAGs from green-lipped mussels provide a synergistic approach to maintaining and supporting joint structure and function, offering a natural and effective way to naturally support the overall mobility of dogs.
Green-lipped mussels are sustainably raised and harvested in New Zealand through aquaculture practices that minimize the environmental impact. They/re grown on ropes suspended in the ocean where they feed on phytoplankton, which allows for a natural growth process without the need for feed or fertilizers. This method of farming not only ensures a consistent and high-quality supply of green-lipped mussels but also supports the health of the surrounding marine environment, without depleting wild stocks or damaging the marine ecosystem
NEM® Eggshell Membrane
Eggshell membrane, a natural substance found between the eggshell and the egg white, is rich in essential nutrients beneficial for joint health, including collagen, glucosamine, chondroitin, and hyaluronic acid. These components are known to support the structure and function of joints, helping to maintain flexibility and mobility in dogs. The collagen and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in eggshell membrane contribute to the strength and elasticity of cartilage and promote a normal inflammatory response.
We use ESM® brand eggshell membrane powder, which comes from human-grade egg shells that are carefully cleaned and selected from eggs used for human baked goods.
Poria Cocos
This useful mushroom grows on the roots of trees and is technically a mass of mycelium. Unlike most mycelium, our organic Poria contains a minimum 30% beta-glucan.
Poria has an affinity for the kidneys but also helps promote healthy bones and joints.
Curcumin
Curcumin, the active compound found in turmeric, antioxidants and promotes a normal inflammatory response. It works by inhibiting the production of cytokines and enzymes that contribute to unhealthy joints. Curcumin’s antioxidant effects help protect joint tissues from oxidative stress and damage, further supporting joint health and function in dogs.
It’s worth noting that a lot of curcumin on the market is synthetic or has synthetic colors and chemicals added. Our curcumin is carbon-14 tested to be 95% pure curcuminoids and completely free of any synthetic additives.

Can HIP & JOINT be taken alongside joint products?
Yes! The ingredients in Hip & Joint should not interact with most joint products. In fact, Hip & Joint pairs well with Safe-Sea, which is a sustainable supply of green lipped mussel oil and other important omega fats not found in many other oils. If you have concerns about any other joint products, please connect with your holistic veterinarian.
Is there glucosamine in Hip & Joint?
Both NEM ® eggshells and green-lipped mussels are rich in glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), which are a natural source of glucosamine, chondroitin and hyaluronic acid.
Can I still give Hip & Joint if my dog reacts to eggs?
If your dog has an egg sensitivity, then there’s a chance he could react to Hip & Joint. If you have concerns about sensitivities, start with a very small amount, or check with your veterinarian.
Is the curcumin in Hip & Joint synthetic?
Our curcumin is pure and natural. It’s carbon-14 tested to be a minimum 95% curcuminoids, the active compound in turmeric. This is the gold standard test for detecting synthetic turmeric and synthetic additives.
Should I store Hip & Joint in the fridge?
A key ingredient in Hip & Joint is green lipped mussel powder, which contains a lot of beneficial fats. These valuable fats will oxidize much more slowly if you store the jar in the fridge. But, if your fridge is tight on space it’s ok to store Hip & Joint in a cool, dark place as long as you use it within 30 days.

My dog has been having joint issues and I started him on this as well as fish oil. He’s been on it since Sept. and is on his third bottle. In Feb he went in for surgery on a torn CCL and his blood work showed elevated iodine levels. The surgery was postponed until they completed an ultasound to check for thyroid tumors. When tests were negative, they proceeded with the surgery. BUT now he’s off of all supplements, especially any containing fish. Even though there’s no iodine added to it, it is still high in iodine. The only way it was discovered was thru the blood tests. He’ll have to be retested in 4 weeks to make sure has cleared his system. It’s scary, when I think it would not have been discovered without the surgery pre-op testing.

“Green-lipped mussels can be a rich source of iodine, but most dogs do not get enough iodine to begin with so it’s very very rarely an issue. But if you are feeding it with a kelp product at the same time, there is the possibility for levels to increase more than they would with just Green Eggs on its own. It is also a MASSIVE source of manganese and zinc, which is very useful!
Any dog owner who is feeding a product that contains kelp needs to be super aware of why they are giving it because of those iodine levels. We personally are not fans of kelp products for this reason.
When it comes to any new product that you wish to add to your dog’s routine, we always recommend consulting with a holistic vet first. Just so you can ensure everything will work well together if they are already on other supplements or medications!”
